We take a look at one of the brand names behind the glamping revolution, and learn how to track down a Wigwam!

Think ‘wigwam’ and a triangle-shaped tent may spring to mind, yet the term refers to a domed dwelling – a term used by several Native Indian tribes – while some tribes from the North East states referred to a wigwam as a home.

Inspired by this idea, Wigwam Holidays® director Charles Gulland thought about using sustainable timber to create comfy camping cabins, allowing for great holidays in the great outdoors.

Wigwams® now come in four models

The Wigwam® cabin was born and the first site to welcome paying customers was Strathfillan, Scotland, in 1994.

Fast-forward over two decades, and Wigwams® now come in four models, from a Wee Brave to a Running Water Deluxe, sleeping between three and five people with a multi-generational, outdoors appeal.

Over 70 sites nationwide feature Wigwams® dwellings, from the Isle of Skye to the Cornish Coast. For use at any time of year All Wigwams® are fully insulated for year-round occupancy, with heating, lighting, mattresses, storage, along with double glazed windows and lockable doors as standard.

The smallest model, the Wee Brave, sleeps three persons, while the top-of-the-range Running Water Deluxe (we love these names!) includes a double bed, en-suite shower and toilet, a kitchenette and dining area, suitable for four guests.

Perfectly poised for adventure

Wigwams® fit the bill perfectly for those with a sense of adventure, as many sites are close to activity centres of national repute.

Adrenaline-filled pursuits could include mountain biking, white water rafting, high diving, bat watches, star-gazing (including rare glimpses of the Northern Lights), vineyard visits and access to Olympic-standard cycle tracks!

Alternatively, you could consider trout fishing, climbing the Cumbrian Mountains or walking one of the UK’s National Trails.

Many Wigwam sites are open all year round. Active breaks can be enjoyed whether it’s sunny or snowing, with many sites welcoming dogs too.

Mr Gulland said: ‘It’s hard to believe that it’s over two decades since the Wigwam brand was born. Wigwams helped launch the glamping revolution, proving you can afford a relaxing holiday in natural surroundings. It’s a chance to get close to nature comfort.’
