The chance to go glamping in one of only 3 Warwick Knight luxury caravans left in the world is surely an opportunity not to be missed. Ali and Rich from the Glamping Orchard teamed up with architect and TV presenter George Clarke from Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces to make this possibility a reality.
In Amazing Spaces George celebrates the wonderful world of small spaces, from treehouses to caravans, camper vans to shipping containers. The world’s passion for small spaces just seems to get bigger and bigger and George is passionate about inspiring others in their design work.
Restoring the Warwick Knight
The show recently featured a restored Warwick Knight luxury caravan, described as “the Rolls Royce of Glamping”. Owners Ali and Rich from the Glamping Orchard have recently opened up the caravan to glamping guests for luxury short breaks or holidays in Gloucestershire.
Their Knight is one of only three left in the world, and quite rightly takes centre stage in this new glamping venture. Lovingly restored, it provides guests with a unique holiday home and the most glamorous of camping experiences.
“Cattle shed on wheels”
It’s all a far cry from when Ali and Rich first stumbled across this antique vehicle, which they affectionately called their “cattle shed on wheels”.
They quickly discovered that not all Knights come with shining armour. This one came as a green algae-covered aluminium box, dilapidated, full of debris, with a fallen-in roof.
Armed with Ali’s animated enthusiasm, Rich’s realistic plans, and a vision of what could be, they took seven months to restore and transform it.
And they got a little help along the way from George, who filmed the entire renovation for Amazing Spaces.
The Rolls Royce of caravans
Ali, Rich and George have restored the Knight to its status as the Rolls Royce of caravans, and permanently settled it into its new home in the Glamping Orchard.
The roof has been raised, windows have been added, and the layout has been meticulously planned to create a magnificent sense of space.
This unique caravan now offers glampers a luxury stay with more than ample room for a family of 4.
Inside there’s a large seating area, complete with crackling log-burner. A fully-operational kitchen offers plenty of worktop space.
Ali and Rich have even restored the elaborate roof garden that once adorned the Warwick Knight at an exclusive Earls Court exhibition in 1952. Guests can stretch their legs on the lush rooftop lawn, or sink into a beanbag while enjoying views of the River Severn.
Funky bunk pods
Sliding doors partition off the sleeping area, so that you can read a book or have a drink by the fire when the kids go to bed. Sleeping areas include funky bunk pods for the kids and a comfy double bed for 2 adults with luxury linen and fantastic orchard views. A charmingly rustic shower-on-wheels is adjacent, as is the compost loo.
Facts about the Warwick Knight
- In 1950 these caravans traded for over £2,000 new – the equivalent to 3 brand new houses at that time.
- It was only manufactured for two years by Coventry Steel, and they stopped making the model in 1952.
- Research estimates that there are about 3 Warwick Knights still in existence, which makes this one very rare and super exciting!
