If you’re after a more luxurious glamping option, you’ll doubtless appreciate a location where the fine detail, quality of offering and a truly great experience means everything. That’s the ethos of Concierge Camping, a new glamping destination within the Ratham Estate in West Ashling, near Chichester.
Steeped in history, the Ratham Estate originates from the 15th century, and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The estate has three Grade II listed properties on-site – a charming circular thatched chapel, the original water mill building and the farmhouse.
The current owners, Lord and Lady Hodgkin (Guy and Tracey), purchased the estate in 2011. They have been busy bringing it back to its former glory, and adding new features for discerning guests to enjoy.
Creating a luxurious holiday destination
Guy and Tracey have demonstrated real vision in the design and build of Concierge Camping. In 2015 they opened the first stage of the offering – a luxury touring park within the estate
This consisted initially of 15 spacious hard-standing pitches. Each lodge is sited in a landscaped area, with hedging between pitches offering seclusion. All pitches are fully-serviced, with a 16A electrical supply, free WiFi, TV and satellite connection. Happily, the touring park is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate large units such as American RVs.
Top notch facilities for all visitors
These high standards extend to the on-site facilities. These include a well-equipped laundry room, and an indoor dish-washing area. Also notable is the luxury toilet and shower block, in which you’ll find waterfall showers, Dyson dryers, and background music. There’s even an ice cube machine for the summer.
The utility area is so posh, it looks more like a upmarket hotel than a touring park’s amenity block. Indeed, Concierge Camping embodies the term “glamping
In the reception area there’s a shop and continental café. These sell fresh pastries, morning croissants, barista-style coffee, local meats and barbeque essentials, wines and local beers. Newspapers can be pre-ordered, and there’s a canopied seating area outside in which to read them on sunny days.
Safari Glamping Lodges, new for Concierge Camping in 2016
The BIG news for 2016 has been the addition of luxurious Safari glamping lodges. These are sited in a pretty area set apart from the touring pitches. Uplit trees create a cosy ambience in the evenings, and the vibe is one of complete relaxation. And if you need help getting your luggage to the lodges, the staff couldn’t be more helpful and will take it for you.
Tracy said; “Concierge Camping has been very well received and we know our guests really enjoy what we offer here. We realise that not everyone wants to own a caravan or motorhome or can afford such a large investment. The lodges mean we can offer something for everyone who would like to enjoy a stay on the park without compromising on luxury.”
Inside the lodges
The lodges are both quirky and luxurious. They look like a cross between a large tent and a lodge, with underfloor heating and insulation throughout. Set adjacent to a stream, each lodge has Rattan furniture and decking outside to make the most of the surroundings.
The equipment tally is as extensive as you would expect in a luxury penthouse apartment. Espresso machines, champagne buckets and cheese boards set a scene for convivial evenings in.
On the practical side there’s a fridge, freezer, microwave, 40” TV’s with Freeview, and an AGA-style oven. The shower room is also hi-tec, so you are unlikely to visit the amenity block lauded earlier in this piece.
There are two two-storey lodges sleeping 6 with a double bedroom downstairs and two twin bedded rooms upstairs. Two further 4 person lodges have a double bed each and either a pair of full size bunk beds or twin beds.
In keeping with the general standards of Concierge Camping, bed linen, towels, and quality toiletries are also provided.
There really doesn’t seem to be anything they haven’t thought of. Past guests rave about Concierge Camping and many re-book immediately, which speaks volumes. Hosts Guy and Tracey have worked hard to create a magical experience for guests. All you need to do is to experience it for yourself!
Exploring the surroundings
Although it’s very tempting to stay on such a luxurious site, there’s plenty to enjoy nearby too. Within a mile of the site there is an award-winning pub, bus stops, a train station, shops and a takeaway restaurant! There is also:
GLORIOUS GOODWOOD. Notable nearby events include the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June, the Glorious Goodwood horse racing in August, and the world renowned Goodwood Revival in September. And the bustling cathedral city of Chichester is five miles away.
SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK. For a more relaxed pace you can also head into the South Downs National Park. Rolling downs and heathland, dramatic white cliffs, and award-winning beaches provide a beautiful landscape at any time of year.
PORTSMOUTH: Portsmouth’s historic dockyard is a major visitor destination. Several significant attractions tell the story of the Royal Navy and British seafaring through the ages. Exhibits include HMS Victory, The Mary Rose and HMS Warrior.
